Lonely Planet Nepal (Travel Guide)

Details and helpful directions!
I took this with me for a month long trip to Nepal, February 2024. Really enjoyed the cultural insights.

Better than nothing, but not by much
Can’t imagine who the intended audience is for this book. Basic info is lacking—good maps, suggestions for accommodations, “Getting there “ and “Getting away” info. The treatment of Kathmandu, with a number of circles/areas that the guide-writers recommend, is bizarre and useless, somehow both too detailed yet without real information. The pages on Lumbini seem to have been written by someone who looked at Google Earth of the area a few years ago, but never actually went to the place.I traveled with a group tour—the book was shallow and chaotic in its historical and cultural analyses—and independently—the book was just an extra weight in my pack, not helpful.

This update lost
This is a good book. It's not that it is misleading or incorrect, its just that the previous edition trekking guide is much more useful. The strength of LP guides has always been the detailed info about lodges and restaurants, plus good details in the "getting there and away" sections. We bought this new edition for a return trip to nepal, and its the old one we're actually using.

Total revamp for the worse.
I don't like the new lonely planet guides at all. I bought the updated Nepal and Bhutan lonely planet guide books. Very little useful info. No getting there advice. The maps aren't helpful at all. The guide is hap hazardly put together. The pages are filled with way too much detailed information attractions that I don't need or want and very little on restaurants and hotels. If I wanted to learn about the detailed history of every temple and attraction I would buy a history book. I buy a travel guide for travel advice. I have been buying lonely planet guide books for years. Sadly with this new format I have bought my last guide from them. Nothing like the old guide books at all.

This book is lacking
The book is nice for what it does include but it is not up to the standard for LP. It lacks so much detail. I could have googled 3/4th of it. I need info not photos.

Incorrectly described on Amazon as an updated edition of Trekking in the Nepal Himalaya
It’s nice colorful book that I’ll probably keep but it’s not a replacement for LP’s trekking guide with only a few pages on the subject.
