Q: Do roots grow through the material once in the ground?

Lol! Slide the plant out of the bag at planting time, you can re use these bags year after year, if you want to throw out, use a utility knife to cut the bag off, and throw in garbage. It is possible that after ten years they might "biodegrade", I have only been using them for three years, and so far I just re use them, nothing has "biodegraded" so far. They are quite good sacs though, and the air pruning is excellent for the root structure. Plus they are quite cheap.
