I like the format of having five albums in a tight
Other than first album "Joy of a Toy", most of Kevin's strongest music is beyond this collection (into the years 1976-1980). But this focuses on the earlier years, which tend to be his most celebrated. The music is sketchy and uneven at times, but this was in the period when he was most prolific and had the most attention drawn to him.I like the format of having five albums in a tight, compact collection. A lot of music in little space. It only takes up a little over one standard CD case in size. The discs are in little album jackets, which is sort of fun too.The only drawback here is that you don't get the bonus tracks that have been more recently released with each individual album. You could get the "Odd Ditties" album though and collect them nicely onto one disc, for a "sixth" companion disc.I'm giving this a four-star (music-wise) because although Joy of a Toy might be 5-star, the others are between 3 and 4 stars. Some people also might not get into this music. It's an acquired taste. Still, this is a great way to get a lot of Kevin Ayers music in one big bang, so he's worth a try!
