The scent is not noticeable at all but product works well .

No the smell of Lavender is quite subtle. I have had a different make which was very strong smelling but this is very pleasant.

can this be heated in an oven if you haven't got a microwave?

No. Because it is fur. I find it excellent. You can buy a small cheap microwave to heat it. Hope this helps you.

Does the neck piece stand up and really cover your neck or do you have to pin it to keep it closed?

Yes the neck piece stands well without pinning. It’s quite heavy so stays in place.
