Regular ground coffee. This device is for brewing coffee. Instant coffee goes directly into the cup and you add water.

Can I use a #4 size filter with this cone or is it not tall enough? Thank you!

I think the the #4 size filters will stick out above by at least 2, possibly 3 inches. Gold #4 size will not fit all the way down. Paper #4 size could possibly be compressed to fit all the way down, but one would have to careful to not overfill when pouring the hot water in. Size #2 paper filters fit as shown in the product's site.

Will this fit on a jug?

It depends on the size of the jug. The diameter of the collapsible coffee filter is 4.3 inches.
