If I put this under my wide screen TV stand, would it allow me to move the stand an inch or two for viewing?

These may be too small it fit under your wide screen tv so I would measure first before ordering. I love these placemats for myself. Don't think they will slide easy if moving a tv around.

Are there any rough edges that could scratch a wood table?

No they’re actually a lot nicer than I thought they were. I have them on a wood table and they are fine.

Does the chemical smell dissipate?

The one i bought did not have a chemical smell

Hot plates make white heat marks on my table, will these stop this?

It should. They are thick enough not to transfer heat but I would not place very hot pots or casserole dishes directly from oven.
