No, it's quite light and has a handy bag so it's easy to carry. It's perfect to take camping and we even took it to the beach, worked well as a sun screen and wind break.

Has anyone used this in the pouring rain and can attest to its' effectiveness or otherwise?

This is a fantastic large fishing umbrella but I use it daily for work. Its very waterproof and for not leak in heavy rain. I do spray it with a waterproofer once or twice a year, highly recommended

Where do the guy ropes attach?

There are loops on the bottom of the zip on shelter. It comes with metal u shaped hoops that pin the shelter to the ground. We use them as work tents so have bought additional spring clamps to clip to the cabinets we are working on
