We take supplements of Vitamin D all year round partly because we just don’t get enough sun. We also find it difficult to eat enough of the right sorts of food. We find supplements can vary in price and look for certain things when comparing. This SMUG version seems like a real ‘value for money’ supplement with some quality components but not quite all that we like.It is always best to check with any supplement if it might interfere with any medication or medical condition. Vitamin D is no exception as its absorption depends on the body’s ability to absorb dietary fat.It is great that this supplement is D3 rather than D2 which is more effective. We always look for Vitamin D alongside Vitamin K2 as this maximises the effects. Vitamin D absorbs calcium from intestines into blood and vitamin K directs this into bones.Whilst Vitamin D regulates the calcium and phosphate (keeping teeth, muscle and bones healthy) it also plays a part in immunity and a healthy heart. Having it with vitamin K2 not only maximises its effect but it also helps deposit the calcium into bones.Please note this SMUG supplement uses K2 in the form MK-7 which is best. Cheaper brands tend to use MK-4 and would need to be taken more than once a day to be as efficient.Because Vit D and Vit K are fat soluble we ideally prefer to find them paired with a source of healthy fat. But this tends to make a difference to price. Often this is MCT (medium chain triglycerides) from coconuts. It is really a ‘belt and braces’ job to amplify absorbency. It is not in this supplement.In conclusion this SMUG supplement has chosen good components which contributes to its effectiveness. What’s more it is excellent value for money. Well worth considering.
