It could use a pencil/pen holder that is more secure, but it got the job done.

A compass scribe has been used since before the time of the Pyramids, and for good reason. It is about as necessary for a complex construction job as a drop weight or a standard measure to judge design on. There is a reason for this, this is just a much higher end version of it. This is a scribe/compassing tool to obtain perfect rounds. The aluminum is aircraft grade it appears, it is both light and very strong to the touch. The color is elegant and more importantly keeps it from disappearing in sawdust or shavings. The marking are clear and embedded within the metal, not just painted on, so expect it to stand up to a lot of wear and tear. The small divet on which the compass rotates is sharp, but short and wide enough in its angle of interface that it doesn’t cause noticeable harm on wood. It also appears to be some hardened material, making it suitable for marking/scoring glass and stone but gentle enough for enough softwoods like pine. Measurements are accurate, look is great, stores away easily and is HARD TO REPLACE when you really do need a good compass. Can be used as a ruler as well in a pinch, but it fulfills it’s purpose as well as you could hope for a thing to do. EXACTLY AS ADVERTISED. This will live in my garage now, but I’ll be getting a few more pairs for two family members that purchased a house recently and are now in the turmoil of making it a “home” with all the small tools and implements that are required in such a daring endeavor. Good quality, very reasonable price, and will undoubtedly be of use to you at some time that any other solution would involve some impromptu rigged setup that undoubtedly will no get you the same quality results. NICE ADDITION TO THE WORKSHOP, not in the way when I don’t need it, there when I do.

Tough to get your measurements correct. The point is not attached to the beam, so it moves on you as you try to lock it on your measurements. Also the holder for the pencil doesn't lock the pencil. So if you need an accurate measurements it's a struggle.

This is a ruler for drawing circles or arcs. The red anodized aluminum ruler is 300mm long. It has two attachments also aluminum. Both have thumb screws for fixing them along the length of the ruler. One attachment has a clamp for gripping pencils/pens. The other has a brass point to fix at the centerpoint of the circle. The ruler has white painted indents to show measurements. The ruler is lightweight and easy to work with.Would recommend this to anyone.
