My 1996 used this on the passenger side below the 2nd door. is a stabilizer. so actually you have 5 shocks on the older exploeres. the front and rear take a different model

Hello, An axle shaft damper was primary designed to help prevent wheel hob and rear axle vibration. It is only used on select vehicle applications, when deemed appropriate or necessary in original vehicle design and manufacturing. If this vehicle was not equipped with one from the factory it is not necessary to add one to a vehicle. However, if equipped with a rear axle shaft damper from the factory, it would be recommended to replace when necessary, similar to replacing the front and rear shocks as needed.
