Q: Is this made of cotton or flax?

It’s linen—so I guess flax. A smoother surface than cotton and tends not to show under the paint

Q: Are oil pastels comparable to this product?

This Centurian product is a most cost effective support for oil primed linen to be used mainly with oil paint mediums. I’ve never thought of these panels for pastel!!!

Q: Does this canvas help oil paint glide on smoothly? I'm a newbie and the current canvas is linen and it's giving me problems.

Artists have personal preferences but oil primed panels don’t absorb as much as acrylic prime so there is less sinking in of the paint into the surface and less drag. I like to add a layer of transparent thin paint for an overall tone to the panel before painting. It definitely makes the next layer smoother to apply and removes the stark whiteness that can make values hard to evaluate. It also provides harmony to the color values. Different linens have slicker surface or lots of tooth to the surface, I find Centurian’s tooth is just right for me.

Q: Are these mdf boards peoduced with formaldehyde ? I am asking because of concerns with voc and also longenvity

To the best of my knowledge they are not. For correct information about whether they use formaldehyde I would contact the manufacturer.
