Is an amp needed with this or is there one preinstalled?

You will need an amp. I have an Autotek 1500 class D. A bet overpowered but gains and crossover set right. Sounds pretty good, yet struggles at super low notes. I plan on upgrading the sub later. Good build, solid.

Is a kenwood xr601-1 excelon 600-watt monoblock rated at 400 watts rms at 4 ohms single to much amp for this subwoofer?

Nope...I have that much power and still believe it can handle more
