Will this work while connected to power, i.e. charging OR only once you disconnect power cable ?

as long as your supply is powerful enough. It can be on and charging. 5v 1A chargers are not enough, 5v 2A chargers can be used up to about 50% power. 5v 2.4A charger is what i recommend.
