No, the legs are the only thing that holds it together.

Can it support a 20 pound 49 inch tv

Yes technically - specifications call for max of 24" flat screen 40 pounds. I use it for a 32"flat screen @ 15 pounds plus a dvd player and cable box and have no issue for two years. Furrino makes great products and in my opinion would get the next size stand to avoid any top heavy issues
