I love this as a backpacking tool
I love this as a backpacking tool. A trencher, a weapon, stake pounder, latrine digger, leveler. The ergonomics are great for a guy like me, who doesn't chop wood everyday, just like the Estwing hammer that I have used during projects for thirty-five years. Keep it sharp and it chops campfire wood very well, even with the light head. I pack ultra light. This is as light, yet still a multiple tool as I could find. Several of my friends have admired it, as I have.Only negative. I thought that it would be fun for throwing entertainment at a camp. Although the one piece design is less likely to break and can't loosen, the wonderfully designed balance for work was not as effective as a traditional throwing design. I will continue to throw my old axe in the back yard, leaving it at home, unless car camping. I'll just have to go hand to hand with the zombies and grizzly bears in the wilderness, with the ghastly spike leading the way (smile).I recommend the sparkly blue color. It looks kind of pretty at first, but good use will give it the more masculine character of an old friend. The all black would get lost, or misplaced very quickly. It is easier to see the blue and for others to see the intimidation, if confronted. Also, for the people looking for weapons and breaching, the light head gives a special control when swinging it. There is more accuracy. There is less of being drawn and through the swing like a heavy ended club. It can be wielded like a large knife with practice. That spike would definitely penetrate any skull. It breaks granite.

Cut Above For The Buck
This is my second Estwing hawk as my nephew decided he preferred my first one. Estwing hammers, hatchets and axes take second place to no other brand, and these hawks are no exception. Quality steel, one piece forging, and likely tempered like they do with their hatchets. The cutting edge needed some touching up on both hawks, but they both took a keen edge. It held up well to hacking into a tree. The spike end on both were sharp, and made short work of some loose bricks and a cinder block. It is not a substitute for a good hatchet, or for using in applications for which it was not designed. I would, however, have no qualms in carrying this in places like Afghanistan or other similar situations.Only negative is the sheath. Something from Kydex or heavy leather would be preferred.

Nice everyday use tomahawk.
Keep in truck along with fire hydrant and first aid kit for car revue purposes. Goes three car windows like butter.

Fantastic American Made Tomahawk.
This is a fantastic American made tomahawk, it really is. I love the jewel blue patriotic paint job on mine, it is solid steel and very sturdy, comes with a nice blade cover and is good for throwing, display, or even as a tool if that's what you intend to use it for. I'd give it a perfect 5 stars.

THIS WAS LONG OVERDUE
Most of us have purchased Estwing hammers, hatchets and axes over the years and they are a standard of reasonably priced, functional, American made tools. Over the years there have been a variety of tomahawks made by SOG, Cold Steel, Bud K and others. Everyone I have ever used had problems. Either the head was loose, it was too heavy or too light, it was cheaply made, whatever. Please note that I did not buy any of these for throwing, I use them to chop kindling, camp chores and personal protection. I do not have a spare couple hundred dollars to buy a real Vietnam special forces tomahawk.. These Estwing tomahawks are priced in the mid $40 range and are single piece with a cushioned handle just like the hammers. You can't go wrong with them

Great Hawk
I am an absolute fan of any bladed tool. The tomahawk is one of my favorite and is also one with a lot of debate whether it is the most effective for carrying as a tool being the most common. I am on the side of the hawk being a great choice for camping or defense. I myself have been in the army so I do have some expertise. What I like about a good tomahawk is that it is light weight and easy to swing, hook and grab which is desired. In any application. The Estwig is a full tang 1055 carbon steel beast. It's the perfect weight and the price is phenominal. I think anyone would be hard pressed to find such a versatile, quality tool at this price I will however point out I do not like the handle and how is resembles a hammer. A coat of cammo paint and 550 cord on mine and it's ready for duty!
