Basic of ashtanga yoga
This is something every ashtanga yoga practitioner should study as this 1% of theory in addition to the 99% of physical practice. It opens the background and the basis of ashtanga. Although not overly wordy but yet so deep.

The book on Primary series for beginners written by the Father of Ashtanga style yoga.
I bought this book because I wanted to learn about fast flowing Ashtanga yoga practice. This book is written by Jois himself who is credited with promoting this style of yoga. The book only covers the primary series. The explanation is decent enough though could have been clearer. He also gives his views on yoga philosophy and life that you can ignore if you wish. If you just restrict yourself to learning primary series Ashtanga Asanas then you will get lot out of this book. I found the primary series Asanas and sequence (barring one asana) very useful. This is not your gentle yoga done in gardens by senior citizens. It is really really rigorous and taxing. I run marathons, go to Gym etc and I am usually drenched in sweat in flat 20 minutes. You get excellent cardio and strength exercise along with flexibility. You feel very very fit physically and very energized mentally after doing it for 45 mins to 60 mins. I would easily recommend the Ashtana style to young or fit people (regardless of age). This is excellent supplemental exercise for people doing other sports or serious Gym exercises. The key issue in learning this style is finding good teacher in India outside Mysore for this style of yoga. For those of us then such book is the only option left. I also recommend along with this book YouTube videos posted by Sharath, Pattabhi's grandson, who now runs his legacy in Mysore. The videos are top class and help us understand the correct way of doing asanas. He is a good teacher spreading yoga across the world.

Pattabhi Jois has written this book with very good content. Please check review from Amazon.com 5 Star from 48 reviewers!!
Sri T. Krishnamacharya's student Pattabhi Jois has written this book with very good content. Foreward - on 1962, Mr M Yamunacharya from University of Mysore has written "Mr K Pattabhi Jois has practical experience in the subject, which add lustre to his work ". The title of the book says "The Original teachings of Ashtanga Yoga Master Sir K. Pattabhi Jois - Yoga Mala". The title of the book does not says the book is about "Ashtanga Yoga". I am practising yoga since 1997, it is true that this book is good and will help the yoga student to a great extent. PS : I do not write reviews often, when I have seen one star for this book , I have prompted to write a review. Please check review from Amazon.com almost close to 5 Star from 48 reviewers. Those 48 reviewers are not wrong!!

Nothing Exceptional
The book is more about sequencing yogāsana-s. It is indeed admirable to provide the appropriate sequences but the correct form is equally, if not more important.I think this is the main difference between Shri BKS Iyengar’s and Shri Pattabhi Jois’s teachings. I liked the book but I would not say I gained a lot from it.
